Competition news

County Week

Well done to Keiron Faulkner on making the Semi-final of the County Championship. Keiron had some very impressive victories in the knockout stages, beating some of the West Cornwall members on their own track. With ex-county champion Andy Rowe on the bag, what could go wrong? Unfortunately it came to an end losing to Rob MacGregor (who is off +2) 3&2. Hopefully Keiron will go on and use this experience to his advantage and progress that bit further next year.

On the Course...

Well done to Greg West on winning the Olver Cup qualifying round with a gross 72, nett 63, from Steve Crane on nett 65. The top eight will now go onto the knockout stages.

Well done also to John Harris on winning this week's Captain's Stableford with 42 points from John Plummer on 41 points. My apologies go to Phil Bassett on awarding his brother Neil with second place last week. I'll give you a big headline next time Phil!

All eyes on Wentworth

What an amazing weekend of sport we have ahead of us: the first cricket test of the summer takes place at Lord’s as England host Pakistan; Liverpool face serial winners Real Madrid in the Champions League final, and tennis’ clay court season comes to its climax as the French Open gets underway at Roland Garros.

But, more importantly, the European Tour returns to our shores as Wentworth hosts the BMW PGA Championship. Last year’s victor, Alex Noren, will be looking to carry on his stellar form and make it back-to-back victories in this event but faces stiff competition from other Ryder Cup stars and past winners like Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey.

Course update...

This week we have had another one of our reps in who has been and had a look around the course. He was very pleased with what he saw and felt that we are still going in the right direction. As you can see from the picture, watering has started. This is mainly to stop the top 1/2 inch of grass from drying out especially with easterly winds forecast. The rootzone area is still wet so we wont be going too mad with the water.

Get the basics right

The importance of getting the basics right shouldn’t be overlooked. Fundamentals, such as making sure you’re aiming correctly and ensuring your ball position is spot on for each club, can go a long way to helping you play better golf. Your posture is one of the most important, so remember to check it the next time you go to the range….

Correct posture, and especially a consistent spine angle, helps you to swing up and down on the same plane for more consistent ball striking. Start by standing tall, with your feet shoulder width apart and your weight on the balls of your feet, as shown above.

Next, tilt towards the ball from your hips. Try to stop your back becoming rounded, which is a less dynamic position. You’ll also want to keep your shoulder blades flat and your chip up, which maintains as straight an angle as possible from the base of your spine.

Now you’ve created an athletic spine angle, let your arms hang naturally below your shoulders. Your hands should then grip the club roughly a hand span away from your thighs. Finally, add a little knee flex as shown above so that you feel athletic and relaxed.
